With the view of comparing the effects of pit and fissure sealant of conventional and
F-releasing type upon early fissure caries, an experimental study was performed. The
sealants of both types were applied upon caries-induced enamel surface respectively, and
their remineralizing effects were evaluated. On the other hand, early enamel caries was
induced artificially at sealed occlusal surfaces with sealants of both types.
Specimens were observed under polarized light microscope, and lesion depths of each
group were measured.
The obtained results were as follows :
1. There showed classical features of negative refringence at surface zone and positive
refringence at subsurface zone in all specimens under polarized light.
2. Comparing the lesion depths under the sealed areas with sealants of both types
after caries induction, lesion depths of F-releasing sealant group(69.6¡¾12.5¥ìm) were
shallower than those of conventional sealant group(100.7¡¾20.6¥ìm) (P<0.01). Surface
zone was more remarkable in F-releasing sealant group.
3. Comparing the lesion depths around the sealed areas after cariesinduction over
sealed areas with sealants of both types, lesion depths of F-releasing sealant group(75.8
¡¾21.9¥ìm) were shallower than those of convertional sealant group(139.2¡¾18.4¥ìm)
(P<0.01).
